Communicating Discord

(MH – March 3rd, 2016)

We are troubled by many who claim to be “peacemakers” that communicate instead “discord”.

We are reminded of  passage in the Holy Scriptures that stands alone in the eyes of the LORD as a Judgment against those who sow discord.

We are warned in the proverbs, chapter 6: 12-19 of the matter of those who sow  discord:

“A man that is an apostate, an unprofitable man, walks with a perverse mouth, He winks with the eyes, presses with the foot, speaks with the finger. With a wicked heart he devises evil, and at all times he sows discord. To such a one his destruction shall presently come, and he shall suddenly be destroyed, and shall no longer have any remedy. Six things there are, which the Lord hates, and the seventh his soul detests: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief, A deceitful witness that utters lies, and him that sows discord among brethren.”

In this political season, we can see clearly there is a lot of folks sowing discord amongst brethren – some more than others – many lies “flowing like a river from the mouth of the dragon” – many claims that are false – many statements on all side that are clearly inaccurate; but the politicians are not alone dear souls.

IMG_4601Look into your own heart – see that even there your own selfish interests often are sought over what is the will of God clearly for your Life.

I have witnessed too many vacillations in my short Life – so many people have in the past contacted us; claiming to have a call from God – and suddenly – we hear from them no more; when the Rule of Benedict is read and understood by them.  Many come with an agenda – few come surrendered to Jesus in their Life in Christ – too much “self-seeking” and very little “self-sacrificed on the altar of surrender” in the Love of God.

We recall that Perfect Love casts out fear.

That means, when we come to a religious Life, we come no longer fearing, because when we follow Jesus in Perfect love – He casts out fear.

Listening to St. Benedict in a chapter close to the last we hear much:

“As there is a harsh and evil zeal which separates from God and leads to hell, so there is a virtuous zeal which separates from vice and leads to God and life everlasting. Let the monks, therefore, practice this zeal with most ardent love; namely, that in honor they forerun one another (Rom 12:10). Let them bear their infirmities, whether of body or mind, with the utmost patience; let them vie with one another in obedience. Let no one follow what he thinks useful to himself, but rather to another. Let them practice fraternal charity with a chaste love. Let them fear God and love their Abbot with sincere and humble affection; let them prefer nothing whatever to Christ, and my He lead us all together to life everlasting.”

Are we listening to the first words of the Rule of Benedict?  Listen!

We are called to the obedience of Faith – and this calling is to listen to the LOVE of God toward God and one another… it is not about (finding our vocation) so much as it is about (finding God’s vocation) for you and me IN HIM!

I am weary of souls who are seeking “their vocation” – pursuing all the “externalities” of religion and forgetting the weightier things of the Law – LOVE GOD and LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

Let’s start there – Loving God; for if we really Love God – we will Love our neighbor and not act like pompous asses toward one another by depriving all of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness in the Liberty we find in JESUS CHRIST – for the Christian it means being allowed to BE ALIVE IN THE LIBERTY OF CHRIST JESUS – freed from the bondage of Satan’s tyranny – Living in the Gospel sense OF Loving God and one another in God.

There is much to say here – St. Benedict and the Holy Scripture speaks to the issue well enough and so – the little soul leaves it to “sink into our hearts” through entering into the silence we enjoy here.
